Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen

The largest of all the Vendeen breeds, The Grand Griffon is a majestic breed from France with the ‘Grand’ referring to its size. This breed stands out for its impressive stature and history that dates back centuries. The Grand Griffon Vendéen is an especially social and spirited pup who loves to follow his nose. He has a cheerful disposition, but this doesn’t prevent him from keeping active – energy being one of the greatest gifts he can offer! This remarkable hound also boasts quite the independent streak.

The English have their beloved collie breeds, and the French relish in their own variety of griffons. From Border Collies to rough Collies all the way up to Shetland Sheepdogs, England’s canine collection is quite diverse – and so too are the range of griffons across France.

The Grand Griffon is an especially distinct breed, characterized by their long shaggy coats and remarkable scenting abilities. Developed as a working animal to hunt large game such as wild boar, deer or foxes, the Grand Griffon was certainly not intended for tracking smaller animals like rabbits and hares!

The Grand Griffon Vendéen is a sturdy, medium-sized dog with an elongated body and striking coat. The coarse hair of their coat serves to protect from thorns, brambles and debris as they traverse through the wilderness on scent trails – featuring long eyebrows, moustache and beard for added character!

Although the Grand Griffon Vendéen possesses many admirable qualities, it is not recommended for first-time dog owners. Primarily because of his need to be kept active and due to his strong willed nature.

As is true of many dogs that were reared for specific purposes, the Grand Griffon Vendéen has a strong will and isn’t afraid to express it. This quality makes them an ideal work companion since they can quickly evaluate situations on their own without needing consistent guidance from their handler. Furthermore, these loving pups are trusted around children and make perfect family members too!

The Grand Griffon Vendéen requires copious amounts of exercise to remain content and healthy. Make sure to dedicate approximately one hour each day for vigorous physical activity, simply in order to satisfy his daily needs. A prudent owner should consider combining movement with mental stimulation by participating in activities like Canicross or agility that are well suited for this breed’s giftedness.

To foster a successful relationship with your Grand Griffon Vendéen, make sure to give them plenty of mental stimulation. An unoccupied Grand Griffon can easily cause havoc and become destructive, engaging in undesirable behaviors such as chewing or digging. To avoid this, provide activities that challenge their mind and offer rewards for good behavior!

The Grand Griffon Vendéen has a thick, long coat that doesn’t require trimming; although, the fur between the toes can sometimes limit movement – in which case it’s best to give them a neat clip. Shedding isn’t an issue for this breed but regular brushing and combing is recommended to keep their mane free of knots and tangles.
