Our Story
FurLyfe started with a simple idea: dog owners should have a better place to connect.
Our family has moved several times over the years, and each move came with the same challenge—starting over in a new community. When we moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia in 2019, we didn’t know many people yet. But one thing quickly stood out: everywhere we went, people were walking their dogs.
Dogs are natural community builders. A quick hello on a sidewalk can turn into a conversation, a friendship, or a playdate at the park. But outside of those brief encounters, it was surprisingly hard to find a place online where dog owners could truly connect with their local dog community.
Traditional social media platforms were loud, impersonal, and often negative. Conversations were buried under algorithms, and meaningful connections with other dog owners felt difficult to maintain. We wanted something different — a place centered around dogs, community, and positivity.
So we started building FurLyfe.
Built by Dog Owners, for Dog Owners
FurLyfe began as a family project. My wife VeeVee helped spark the original idea during a time when we were adjusting to life in a new town, growing our family, and trying to find ways to connect with other dog lovers nearby. Since welcoming our three kids, she has stepped back from the day-to-day work of the platform, but the spirit behind FurLyfe still reflects the same idea that started it all: dogs bring people together.
With that inspiration, I began building the platform one Google search at a time.
Our goal was simple: create a place where dog owners could connect through the things that matter most — their dogs, their local communities, and their shared experiences as owners.
Every Dog Has a Story
Our own dogs helped shape one of the most unique features of FurLyfe.
Like many rescue owners, we spent years guessing what breeds might make up our dogs. Eventually we learned through DNA testing that our pups were incredible mixes of several breeds.
Leonidas is a mix of Siberian Husky, Cocker Spaniel, Brittany, and Beagle.
Millie is a mix of Great Dane, Chihuahua, Chow Chow, and Terrier.
They reminded us that many dogs don’t fit neatly into a single breed category — and that’s part of what makes them special.
FurLyfe allows users to create and discover communities around mixed breeds and unique combinations, making it easier for owners of rescue dogs to find others with similar pups.
Because every dog deserves a place to belong.
Connecting the Dog Community
Beyond breed communities, we also wanted to solve another question dog owners often have:
What happened to my dog’s littermates?
FurLyfe allows breeders and rescues to create litter-specific groups, helping owners stay connected with the dogs their puppies grew up with. It’s a way to share updates, stories, and milestones with the people who started the journey together.
We also built features that help owners connect locally, making it easier to discover nearby dog owners, parks, and potential playmates.
Because sometimes the best friendships start with two dogs meeting on a sidewalk.
Building Healthy Social Media
As FurLyfe has grown, our mission has expanded.
We aren’t just building another social platform.
We are trying to build a healthier kind of social media.
