With a goal of creating the ultimate multi-function gundog, Slovakian breeders developed the Rough Haired Pointer in the 1950s. This pioneering pooch was constructed from crossing German Wirehaired Pointers, Český Fouseks and Weimaraners — forming an efficient hunting companion capable of tracking, pointing and retrieving on land or water!

The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer is primarily used as a working dog and in its native Slovakia all accepted breeding dogs must pass performance trials, making it beloved by gundog fanatics. This breed has a strong physique but not too heavy, standing tall with tremendous endurance ideal for the work they do.

The Rough Haired Pointer’s coat is, as its namesake suggests, coarse and ordinarily gray or gray roan in color – owing to its ancestor the Weimaraner. With strong muscles underlying their straight back and broad hindquarters, these dogs boast a noble and elegant frame that radiates strength throughout every part of their body.

The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer is an astonishingly devoted and hard-working companion that will never let you down. Nevertheless, like any other pup, it can’t be left unattended at home for prolonged time frames as they don’t handle loneliness easily. This breed excels in obedience tasks and activities with its human because of its eagerness to please!

The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer may not be a popular choice for pet ownership, but its gentle and amicable disposition towards children makes it an excellent companion. While it does thrive on energy, this breed’s large stature can often appear intimidating; however, the Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer is never kept as a guard dog. With proper supervision around youngsters, this spirited pooch will bring joy to any household!

Due to their eagerness to please and ability for quick learning, the breed is known for having a rather simple training process. With adequate exercise and daily walks, recall should be an effortless task; housebreaking equally as easy if they have access to outside time or a routine walk regimen.

The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer breed needs an energetic lifestyle to be content. A minimum of 90 minutes a day devoted to off-leash activities – such as running and playing freely – is necessary. This type of pup would do best in an active family that lives in the countryside, who can provide them with plenty of physical activity.

The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer is a unique breed whose coat can vary drastically, from broken and extremely wiry to softer and furry yet still rough. The outer layer of the coat should be double-layered and reach around one-and-a-half inches in length—though it’s typically thicker near the head area as well as on their ears. Professional grooming or trimming isn’t necessary for this breed; with weekly brushing at home, you’ll have your pup looking sharp!
