Schipperke

From a distance, the Schipperke’s small size and unique coat might make you think it is related to Pomeranians, but in actuality, this Non-Sporting Group member derived from sheepdogs. If you’re looking for an intelligent, active companion who will make a great sports partner and top-notch watchdog, then the Schipperke is your pup! Highly energetic with lots of brains and speed to spare, this little black devil has earned his nickname due to his mischievous nature – so don’t forget that taking charge over him is essential.

This small, black pup with its distinctive fox-like features and cheerful expression is speculated to be a miniaturized version of an old Belgian sheepdog breed. It bears striking similarities to certain Spitz or Northern breeds of dogs, but the diminutive Schipperke was actually downsized from the 40 pound bulky Leauvenaar, and its name is derived from Flemish language meaning “little captain”. This agile breed of canine is renowned for its vigilance on canal boats, however they are also beloved by shoemakers and other craftspeople due to their excellent faithfulness. These small but mighty doggos make a perfect companion!

This compact pup boasts a weight of 10 to 16 pounds, and has an impressive silhouette with its characteristic double coat that drapes around the neck like a regal cape. The Schipperke is remarkable in many ways; however, it’s not right for everyone. If you’re considering taking one home, here are some key facts about this breed that you need to be aware of!

If you’re a passive or shy individual, the Schipperke is not the ideal pet for you. This breed requires an owner who can provide structure and dominance; they are intelligent dogs with personalities of their own! If you don’t want them calling all the shots, it’s best to be one step ahead of your pup at all times.

The Schipperke is an enthusiastic and mischievous bundle of energy. It makes a great watchdog, barking at the slightest sight or sound; however, it must be taught when to bark and when to stop. He’s best suited for families with older kids who are mature enough to handle him responsibly while also enjoying his companionship.

A Schipperke requires at least a 20 to 30-minute walk each day, but if your canine companion is in good health you can even take him on runs with you! Even better, why not challenge and entertain his mind as well by training him for agility, flyball, obedience or rally? These activities are great ways to provide both physical and mental stimulation. If he doesn’t get the exercise he needs mentally and physically though, don’t be surprised when starts digging holes or displaying other destructive behaviors.

Contain your Schipperke in a safe, fenced yard. Not only is he an avid digger, but his curiosity and chasing instincts often gets the best of him as small animals like squirrels become part of the chase! But beware; this breed has also been known to hunt down moles, rats, mice and other vermin with fervor – making it important for you to keep him secure at all times.

To effectively train your clever, autonomous Schipperke, you need to be consistent and patient. Make sure that the training sessions are enjoyable yet brief so they remain interesting for both of you. Don’t be shocked when he alters commands or surpasses your expectations with his intelligence. To make progress faster, use positive reinforcement such as compliments, playtime and treats – this will bring out the best results!

Maintaining your Schipperke’s fluffy coat may seem tedious, however, with weekly brushing you will be able to keep it in tip-top condition – even more if he is shedding. On top of that, make sure to trim the nails regularly and clean their ears as well as brush their teeth. With just a few extra steps each week your pup can look its best!
