Schapendoes

The Schapendoes, also known as the Dutch Sheep Dog, was a popular farm dog and sheepherder during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Typically found in Drenthe – a northeastern Holland province with marshlands, swamps and forests – its name originates from “does” which means swamp in Dutch.

The Schapendoes was largely unknown outside of the Netherlands until World War I, and nearly became extinct in the 1940s due to competition from imported Border Collies. Fortunately, a breed club named Nederlandse Schapendoes was formed in 1947, preserving this distinctive canine for generations to come.

The Schapendoes is an exuberant Dutch herding dog that radiates cheerfulness, wit and courage with a remarkable jumping ability. With its thick double coat, shedding is minimal while grooming needs are low-maintenance – making him the perfect companion for energetic people or families! His past as a farm dog remains evident in his intelligence to work autonomously as well as cooperate well. Currently, he is often regarded as a beloved family pet with an accommodating nature that can make him the perfect choice for those who are prepared to invest in training and provide daily physical activity.

This active pup thrives in a variety of canine activities and sports such as agility, herding, and more- with your vet’s approval, of course. If you yell “Jump!”, he’ll ask “how high?” so make sure to build a fence that is tall enough to contain his boundless energy. Moreover, if you are an avid hiker or runner looking for a reliable companion on the trail then this breed might be just what you need!

The Schapendoes is an energetic breed, so providing it with the daily physical stimulation it needs – like running, a game of fetch, or even herding some livestock on your acreage – should keep him content. After his exercise session has been completed and all energy levels have been expended, this loyal pup will likely be delighted to spend time cuddling up while you watch a movie together.

The Schapendoes is an excellent companion for young people of any age when given early socialization, but all interactions between the pup and children should be supervised. His energy level makes him a great playmate for teenagers as well as older kids! Do you have any pets in your home? The Schapendoes is known to be compatible with not only other canine friends, but also cats – particularly when they are raised together!

To maintain the Schapendoes’ lengthy coat, owners should commit to a daily grooming session. Trimming is not necessary as this ‘shabby look’ is an inherent trait of the breed itself and doesn’t need correcting. Additionally, those with a furry companion must inspect their ear canals every few days since pendulous ears are prone to infections.
