Redbone Coonhound

The Redbone Coonhound is a breed that can proudly be labelled “Made in America.” Developed from Foxhounds, Bloodhounds and perhaps Irish Hounds, the man who did most of its breeding was George E.L Birdsong – an illustrious foxhunter and breeder hailing from Georgia. This striking dog has become a symbol of American heritage as it stands out with its deep chestnut red coat!

With his signature rich mahogany coloring, the Redbone Coonhound is an undeniably striking breed. He tends to be on the more relaxed side of Coonhounds and will thrive in a rural environment where he can hunt and howl to his heart’s content. Additionally, this pup features a short coat that requires minimal grooming but sheds moderately all year round.

Training Redbone Coonhounds can be tricky. These breeds are notoriously independent thinkers, so they often have a hard time focusing on the task at hand due to their keen sense of smell – if your pup’s nose is down, his ears will likely follow suit! To ensure successful training sessions, start early and keep them short; as well utilizing positive reinforcement techniques like food rewards for good behavior. Additionally, never resort to force when trying to train hounds – praising and rewarding your pet is much more efficient!

If your family consists of small children, a Redbone may make the perfect companion; however, adopting an adult dog is always best as they will be calmer than puppies.

Redbones have the potential to be great companions for cats and other animals, particularly when raised together. However, their inclination to chase small furry creatures should not be underestimated. Redbones possess tremendous athleticism that can easily be fulfilled by taking a couple of extended walks or runs each day. For an extra boost in physical activity, it’s suggested they are provided with a safe space where they can run freely at least once every week – plus they love frolicking in water!

Redbones can be comfortable living both indoors and outdoors, but they do enjoy the luxuries of air conditioning and plush furniture just like we do! Moreover, Coonhounds are very fond of human interaction; leaving them by themselves in the backyard simply won’t cut it. You’d miss out on one of their best qualities – loyal companionship with their people.

For the Redbone Coonhound, height can vary between 21 and 27 inches depending on gender – females being smaller. His coat is easy to manage with a simple weekly brushing using a rubber curry brush; other than that, he needs regular nail trims, ear cleanings and toothbrushing for utmost hygiene.

Understand that a scenthound such as the Redbone might possess what is commonly described as a musty scent. Giving them regular baths will help reduce the smell, yet it’s something you need to be ready for.

Despite his drawbacks, Redbones can be a great companion for the right person. His sweet and melodic voice will surely cheer up those who love him; however, it’s likely that your neighbors five miles away might just hear his exuberant bark when he discovers an enticing scent. If you live in close proximity to others then this breed may not be suitable for you.
