Kooikerhondje

While largely unknown, the Kooikerhondje (pronounced “COY–ker–HUND–che”) is fast becoming a popular breed. Native to Netherlands and centuries old, this lovable hunting dog was rescued from near-extinction in the mid twentieth century. It utilizes an interesting technique for capturing waterfowl – it wags its tail like a lure! This unique method of chasing ducks is rare and shared by only a few other breeds including the the Nova Scotia Duck Trolling Retriever.

The Kooikerhondje is an intelligent and independent breed, making it both a delightful companion as well as prone to getting into trouble. Despite their eagerness to please, these dogs require experienced handlers who can project confidence in order for them to respond successfully during training. If the pack leader lacks authority or fails to meet the high expectations of this clever canine, they may take advantage of any perceived loophole—which often leads down paths that would be best avoided!

Thanks to the current responsible breeding strategies combined with recent advancements in genetic testing, Kooikers now have a higher chance of avoiding inherited diseases than ever before. With proper care and a bit of luck, most Kooikers can expect to live between 12-14 years old!

The Kooiker is a versatile companion, able to join in on many activities (as long as their overall health allows). Hikes, strolls at the beach and dog sports are all things your pup will love. This breed tends to excel in agility, dock diving, barn hunt and lure coursing – though they frequently do well with rally, flyball nose work, or tracking too! As long as you’re there by his side he’ll be content doing anything together.

After a long day at work, you can come home and be instantly greeted by the Kooiker’s wagging white tail. They will warm your lap or feet with their warmth in the evening, giving you just what you need to relax after such a busy day. The beauty of this breed is that they adjust themselves according to whatever lifestyle their owners have – from high energy activities like half-hour walks and other active plays for those who lead an energetic life, all the way down to simply cuddling up on your couch while watching TV together when it’s time for both of you to wind down.

To keep the Kooikerhondje’s silky coat shiny and free of mats, regular brushing is a must – two to three times weekly. Washing its fur should be done sparingly due to its water-loving nature, it relies on the oil produced by its hair to safeguard it from any harm. As with other canines, daily tooth cleaning using an appropriate brush and paste will bring great benefits for this breed as well as periodic nail trimming.

The Kooiker is a gentle, somewhat reserved dog that tends to be wary of loud and boisterous personalities. With the right upbringing, these pooches will get along swimmingly with children, other dogs and cats alike. Just keep an eye out for their high prey drive; small furry or feathered family members may not be safe if your Kooiker hasn’t learned how to play nice!
