Curly-Coated Retriever

Dating back to the late 18th century, the Curly Coated Retriever is one of two retrievers that are considered some of the oldest breeds. The breed was likely developed through a combination of Old English Water Dogs, Irish Water Spaniels and small Newfoundlands – and later an infusion from Poodles for good measure! The result of this breeding process was a black or liver-colored Retriever, who had tight curls all over his body and an intense enthusiasm for retrieving ducks in the water.

They are extremely active dogs that love to spend time with their owners on outdoor adventures. Although they may not be as friendly as Labrador Retrievers, these canines still make terrific family companions. The Curly is a great pet to have with its lovable personality, willingness to be trained, and maintenance-free coat. This breed of retriever loves his family dearly but can be aloof when it comes to strangers. Despite this, he will bring an abundance of joy and amusement into your home while providing plenty of protection as well!

If you want to train a Curly Coated Retriever, you must understand that they easily get sidetracked given their short attention span. Building an effective training program is crucial in order to control any negative behaviors like mouthing, and it should also be engaging enough to tire out your pup before things like chewing on slippers become the focus of playtime.

As the Curly is slow to mature, it can require more time and patience for training sessions to produce lasting results. Positive reinforcement strategies like playtime, encouragement and treats are a great way to motivate your pup as they learn quickly when properly motivated! Be patient; with a little effort, you’ll soon have an obedient four-legged friend by your side.

The Curly may be uncommon, but he has a dedicated group of devotees who cherish him for his intelligence, trainability, varied abilities, comical personality and unique looks. He’s certainly not the perfect breed for everyone; however, if you can appreciate his ever-active mental capacity then you will recognize that he is an affectionate, gifted and amusing companion.

The retriever type of breed is usually full of vitality, requiring slightly less exercise than a Lab or Flat Coat. To best use his energy in an engaging manner, consider involving him in stimulating activities like agility and flyball competitions, playing with flying discs or teaching him to be your partner while skating on the rink or skateboarding. He has potential for competitive obedience as well! This particular breed can live up until their late teenage years; however, if they end up getting medical conditions such as epilepsy and cancer then that may shorten the average lifespan.

Like most canine companions, Curly-Coats can become agitated and destructive if left to their own devices. They require the presence of other dogs for company as well as regular attention from their owners to stay happy and healthy. Nevertheless, when a family is dedicated to regularly training and exercising them, then these curly pups prosper in leaps and bounds!
