Austrian Black and Tan Hound

Established in 1884, it’s widely speculated that the breed has been around for centuries prior. Despite being a mystery of sorts, many believe they were bred from nearby German breeds such as the German Pinscher and Hanover Hound over several generations. Others have suggested their ancestry dates back to Celtic culture or are an invention of St Hubert Monastery monks more than 1000 years ago – only adding to their mysterious background!

Developed in Austria, the Austrian Black & Tan Hound is a medium-sized breed with an impressive physique, distinctive drooping ears and brown eyes – all topped off with a glamorous black and tan coat. These hounds aren’t typically kept as pets but rather used for hunting small game like rabbits and foxes due to their outstanding stamina that drives them to always be working or moving.

When it comes to hunting at high altitudes, the Austrian Black & Tan Hound is in its element. This breed of hound has been traditionally employed for pursuing rabbits and hare; however, they are remarkably flexible and can also find larger game such as deer. Working in small packs with hunters alongside them rather than on horseback makes these dogs exceptional companions throughout any hunt.

Deserving of its place in the UKC’s scent hound group, the Austrian Black & Tan Hound is a rare breed primarily found in Austria. Here they are used as working dogs and rarely seen outside of their homeland as companion animals.

Austrian Black & Tan Hounds are used primarily as working canines, and it is difficult to comment on their disposition beyond hunting. That said, the breed standard of these hounds conveys that they are both “willing” and “agreeable,” while hunters who have worked with them report generally pleasant temperaments.

Intelligent and highly sociable, the Austrian Black & Tan Hound is known to form strong bonds with its family members and be lenient towards children. However, given their hunting instincts, it is not recommended to let them near small animals as they may pursue them instinctively. Fortunately for owners who frequently have other canine visitors around the house, these dogs get along marvelously well with others of their kind.

The Austrian Black & Tan Hound has established itself as a more obedient and responsive breed when compared to other hound dogs, earning them the reputation of being particularly trainable. Training this dog requires an experienced hand who is willing to commit their time from puppyhood onwards for successful outcomes: firmness and consistency are key!

Importantly, the Austrian Black & Tan Hound necessitates much more exercise than a casual daily walk can provide. A rural setting is ideal for them to wander over extensive areas of land and engage in their natural trailing behaviors. To prevent restlessness, incorporating activities and games into their regime is helpful – it keeps them entertained!

Potential owners should be aware that an Austrian Black & Tan Hound is known to shed copiously and may salivate from time to time. It’s short, glossy coat requires minimal upkeep; though weekly brushing can help keep it in good condition. Also, its claws must be trimmed every couple of months or remain filed down depending on the type of terrain they are exposed to daily.
