Rat Terrier

Celebrating a true American heritage, the Rat Terrier was developed to be an all-purpose farm dog that would hunt small game and kill rats and other rodents. This breed of canine could commonly be seen on farms in the early 1900s, making it one of the most iconic breeds of that time period.

The Rat Terrier was originally developed from the Smooth Fox Terrier and has since been carefully bred with other breeds such as the Italian Greyhound, Whippet, Beagle, Miniature Pinscher and Chihuahua in order to create a more effective ratter for farms and an able hunting companion for farmers. Like his cousin the Toy Fox Terrier, he’s mischievous yet courageous. The Rat terrier is blessed with two sizes – miniature & standard – making it ideal for people who prefer different types of dog-size! Above all that though, these dogs are known to be cheerful temperaments and incredibly sensitive souls.

With a strong terrier personality, this pup is still more relaxed than some of the other breeds like Jack Russells and loves to cuddle with his humans. He’s known for liking to “chat”, gladly sharing his thoughts whenever he can.

Rat Terriers are full of life, smart, and always up for a good time. While that makes him an ideal companion to have around, it also means he’s more likely than other breeds to act out when left alone—which is why plenty of socialization and crate training from the get-go is essential. If you want your Rat Terrier pal to remain happy even when no one’s home with them, ensure they can easily be entertained in their own safe space like a dog-proofed room or comfortable crate. That way separation anxiety won’t set in!

Ratties love to get their paws dirty, barking and exploring enthusiastically. They don’t usually bark excessively unless they’re feeling neglected or ignored; but be warned – if provoked by another canine companion, these little terriers are fearless defenders! All in all Ratties make a loving addition to any family and will bring joy with every dig, yap and adventure.

The Rat Terrier is intelligent and adapts quickly, although has a short attention span. Keep training sessions enjoyable and fast-paced to keep his focus. He’s agile and athletic; excelling at dog sports like agility, flyball, rally or even be an exceptional therapy companion!

As the Rattie is usually 8 to 25 pounds in size, it fits into many types of households. If you reside in an apartment or condo, however, his energetic nature and potential for vocalization should give you cause to pause if no one will be home during the day. Rat Terriers need plenty of attention from their owners – ideally spending a large amount of time with them every single day – so they make for good companions within families that have older kids and other animals as well.

The Rat Terrier’s sleek coat requires only a brief weekly brushing to rid the fur of dead hairs. When shedding season hits in spring and fall, brush him more regularly for an optimal level of cleanliness. Additionally, keep up with nail-trimming sessions as well as ear and dental hygiene maintenance; if he happens to roll around in something smelly every once in awhile, then give him a bath too!
