Russell Terrier

Descended from an illustrious line of fox-working dogs owned by Rev. John “The Sporting Parson” Russell in the mid 1800s, both the Russell and Parson Russell terriers serve as unique representations of their common heritage. Through selective breeding, these two breeds have become distinctively separate entities; while one was crafted for speed to keep up with hounds on a hunt, the other is renowned for its agility underground or when chasing game above ground.

The Russell Terrier is a diminutive variation of the Parson Russell and Jack Russel Terriers, which goes by many other names around the world such as Irish Russel Terrier or English Russel Terrier. The Russell Terrier and the Parson Russell Terrier possess a similar body type, yet the legs of the former are significantly shorter than those of its cousin. This trait was deliberately cultivated as this breed is especially adept at diving into fox dens which would otherwise be inaccessible to hunting hounds.

The Russell Terrier’s physical features include a long torso and short legs, all of which are complemented by its signature white-with-markings coat. Typically standing at 10 to 12 inches tall in adulthood, they’re slightly shorter than their Parson or Jack Russell Terrier counterparts. When fully grown, these canine companions typically weigh between 9 and 15 pounds.

Possessing energy, a hint of defiance and an undeniable urge to zoom after prey, the Russell Terrier is quite the package. Yet if its home can meet this breed’s activity needs, then it will make for a faithful companion animal without doubt.

Exercise is essential for maintaining the health and vigor of a Russell Terrier. To make this energetic breed obey, keep your training sessions short but active. As they love having something to do, activities such as agility classes, flyball competitions and luring are superb options to tire them out!

The Russell Terrier is equipped with three possible coat types of fur—smooth, rough and broken. With weekly brushing sessions you can ensure that the coat stays clean and looking fresh.
