Rafeiro do Alentejo

The origin of the breed is unknown, though it is believed that they have descended from ancient Molosser type dogs in central Asia thousands of years ago. Over time, local breeds such as the Estrela Mountain Dog and Spanish Mastiff may have had an influence on their genetics when brought to the Iberian Peninsula.

This magnificent giant is also called the Rafeiro do Alentejo, which translates to ‘mongrel of Alentejo’ in Portuguese. However, it’s important to note that this breed still remains a purebred despite its name! The UKC and the AKC through their foundation stock service both recognize the Portuguese Mastiff as an official breed.

In the past, Portuguese Mastiffs were tremendously beneficial shepherding dogs that would guide livestock from north to south and back again while also serving as a protector of the herds. As modernization swept through the farming industry, however, these working canines became obsolete in Portugal- leading to an alarming scarcity of this breed throughout the region.

Although these giant dogs generally do well in a home with children, it is essential that the kids understand their boundaries so as to prevent any aggressive behavior from occurring. Socialization must occur early on, and barrier-setting should be done for both parties involved. Additionally, when young children are playing with such large furry friends supervision is key to ensure safety for everyone!

The Portuguese Mastiff stands out with its striking size, reaching up to 130 pounds and boasting a bear-like head. Its skull is wide, coupled with powerful jaws and thin lips. The small brown eyes showcase an expression of tranquility and honesty. Additionally, the ears are triangular but petite and flopping to each side of their face for an incredibly adorable look!

They are known for its distinct coat which can be a blend of black, fawn, or brindle. Its medium-length fur is thick and straight, so brushing it just once every week should suffice.

The Portuguese Mastiff has kept its ancestors’ character intact – loyal, independent and responsible workers. These dogs are known for their serious demeanor; they take themselves and the role of protecting the family seriously. With a strong nature, these guard dogs will make sure your home is safe at all times!

The sheer power and personality of this breed makes it a difficult one to handle, suggesting that those with limited expertise or time should avoid them. Training is paramount when owning these dogs; inadequate preparation could lead to unfortunate results.

To cultivate a well-mannered and reasonable Portuguese Mastiff, owners should attend to training from an early age as well as all throughout the dog’s life. If neglected, their willful attitude and dominant actions can be difficult to manage – they tend to think they are in charge of every situation! To ensure that your pup respects you as its master, take time out of each day for consistent training exercises.

To ensure a healthy life for your Portuguese Mastiff, avoid over-exercising–this can damage their developing joints and lead to chronic pain. Instead, provide steady exercise in an incremental manner for best results.
