Portuguese Podengo Pequeno

The Portuguese Podengo, a lovable purebred from Portugal, comes in three distinct sizes—small (Pequeno), medium and large. The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno has an interesting look much like the Jack Russell Terrier or Rat Terrier; however they are not related to terriers at all. Also known as the Portuguese Warren Hound and Rabbit Dog, these furry friends have earned their rightful place among Portugal’s most beloved breeds!

One of the oldest breeds in existence, Portuguese Podengo Pequeno has been a part of Portugal’s culture for centuries. Historians believe that traders and invaders from Rome brought this breed to the coastal country about 600 B.C., where it was lived amongst by both Romans and Phoenicians alike. To this day, its heritage can still be seen in many parts of Portugal!

With their ultimate ability to capture and kill rabbits, the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno was an invaluable asset to the local population. As they were loaded aboard many of the 15th-century ships that sailed from Portugal’s coast to North America, it became quickly evident why these dogs are such successful rabbit hunters; because those same characteristics translate perfectly into rodent hunting as well!

Pequeno coats come in a variety of colors and lengths, ranging from light to dark yellow or fawn; black, brown, and marked options are also available. Generally speaking they have either short ‘smooth’ fur or longer ‘wired’ hair – the smooth type being more traditional while the wire comes from interbreeding with other breeds during the 1900s. The Pequeno is typically healthy and has an average lifespan of 15-17 years.

The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno boasts an energetic spirit and good-natured qualities, making them a great companion for families with multiple pets. They typically thrive around children, as they are quite playful; Whether it’s going on adventures with their owners or running around the backyard with kids. But remember to keep your puppy leashed or safely inside a fence – this breed has been known to pursue smaller creatures due to its curious nature!

Portuguese Podengo Pequeno dogs are highly energetic and need a way to burn off the excess energy. As such, these pups require at least one long walk every day and having access to an enclosed backyard gives them even more room for activity (though it’s not necessary if they have plenty of other activities). Additionally, be sure that any fences you may have around your yard are secure since this breed can easily take after their noses on a hunt and become difficult to contain.

The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno is intelligent and motivated, which means this breed usually does very well with training. Only use positive reinforcement-based methods when training them; ignore negative behaviors and reward positive ones instead. A properly trained and socialized Portuguese Podengo Pequeno will be friendly to strangers and other dogs, making them an excellent addition to any family.

Keeping your Portuguese Podengo Pequeno healthy and well-groomed is relatively simple. A bath once per month should keep them clean, with combing needed afterwards if they have wiry fur. Additionally, a monthly nail trim and weekly ear cleaning are important to maintain their hygiene; brushing your dog’s teeth at least five days of the week will also help keep dental issues away! If they have long or wiry hair, then add regular brushing into the mix as well. Following these steps can ensure that your pup stays in top condition for years to come!
