Pekingese

In its homeland of China, the Pekingese is affectionately known as the ‘Lion Dog’ due to their resemblance to ornamental lions that guard Chinese palaces. The breed was exclusively owned by Chinese royalty throughout many centuries and anyone else in possession of them would suffer death as punishment! Seen by royals as a symbol of status and companionship, this treasured pup has been an integral part of Chinese culture since ages past.

This furry companion, with its long and voluminous coat, necessitates regular at-home grooming as well as a trip to the groomers every couple of weeks. Furthermore, this particular breed has an extremely flat face which causes their eyes to protrude and be more prone to injury; it also makes them vulnerable in warm weather due to overheating.

Though Pekes are perfect for apartment living due to their minimal exercise needs, they can be prone to barking and may need some training. Despite their regal appearance, the breed is loving and jovial with its owners. Pekes make an ideal choice of pet for those who don’t have much space but still want a loyal companion – just remember to put in that extra bit of effort when it comes to preventing any potential noise issues!

Pekingese are renowned for their alertness and wariness of strangers, making them exceptional guard dogs. They detest being mistreated or mishandled, so beware that they may bite if provoked; it is due to this trait that Pekes are not best suited for households with young children. Additionally, these loyal companions tend to abhor the presence of other animals; however, some can be socialized to accept other Pekingese in their vicinity.

Despite their renowned stubbornness, intelligence, and independent nature, training Pekingese is possible with the right approach. Offering positive reinforcement through treats or rewards helps encourage good behaviour – after all, they don’t respond to commands but rather take suggestions from owners seriously! Though it may require a significant amount of coaxing and bribery before your Peke complies with any given command, be patient; you’ll eventually see results!

Pekingese are not a fan of strenuous physical activities and only require minimal exercise, such as short lead walking sessions. Additionally, having access to an outdoor garden where they can inspect their surroundings at their own leisure would be beneficial for them. Inside the home, these pups will likely find joy in spending most of their time comfortably supervising all that occurs around them.

Owning a Pekingese can be an exceptionally time-intensive endeavor; their lengthy coats are prone to tangling and knotting, requiring diligent brushing at least twice every week – with some sessions lasting up to two hours. And of course, regular visits with a professional groomer for clipping is also essential. Additionally, the skin folds common in this breed necessitate frequent cleaning which takes additional effort from owners as part of its grooming requirements. It’s no wonder the popularity of the Pekes has waned over recent years due to this demanding upkeep!
