Large Munsterlander

The Large Münsterländer is an amazing working-breed from the region of Germany it was developed in: Münster. This breed has been performing similar hunting, pointing, and retrieving gundog duties since the Middle Ages. However, only recently (since early twentieth century) have they become recognized as a distinct breed!

Hunters are most likely to appreciate its impressive working abilities, however it can also make for a great family dog when it is given adequate exercise and mental stimulation. Many trustworthy breeders won’t generally sell their puppies into households that don’t hunt since it’s hard to maintain this balance if the pup isn’t provided with an appropriate way of expressing its preying instinct.

Although it isn’t the most widely acclaimed gundog, the Large Münsterländer’s enduring popularity is owed to its versatility. Unlike other breeds that excel in one specific area of hunting, this breed has a proficiency for tracking, pointing and retrieving; such is their prey drive that they will try to hunt any animal they come across while out on a trail. On top of all these attributes, water birds are especially receptive to this breed’s attention making them perfect quarry for traditional hunts. They have also been known to pursue and kill wild boar

The Large Münsterländer is an exuberant and extremely versatile breed of gundog that requires a great deal of exercise to stay stimulated. While they make for delightful companions after a long day, the majority of non-hunting households won’t be able to offer them the activity levels necessary — running against their instinctive nature.

The athletic physique of this breed demands a deep and broad chest, slim abdomen, and tail that is held at or slightly above horizontal. Its shoulder blades are laid back which allows for well-angled forelimbs as its hind limbs remain upright. The black and white coat is long with a wave to it yet still close to the skin. There are three types of color variations: White & Black, Blue Roan, Black – all equally distinguished among one another in their own specific way.

The Large Münsterländer is an intelligent and obedient pup, however it has a great deal of energy that could be wasted when kept as a pet. Without sufficient exercise and stimulation, this dog can become restless or frustrated. However, if given the opportunity to work with its owner on hunting trips at up to two hundred yards away from them in the field, this breed will demonstrate their responsiveness and sensitivity while remaining cheerful.

This breed is usually quite tolerant of children, though when overexcited it can be too energetic for the very young. It typically gets along with other dogs nicely; however, cats and other pets may not fare as well since they are likely to be viewed by this breed as a food source rather than family members.

The Large Münsterländer is an indefatigable breed and requires plenty of activity to stay healthy. To ensure its well-being, it should have at least two hours of strenuous exercise each day – like running beside a bike! But what this canine truly desires is a full day spent chasing ducks or geese on the hunt!

The Large Münsterländer is widely praised for its intelligence; various studies have confirmed that it outranks other hunting breeds in terms of working abilities. In addition to being talented hunters, this breed’s natural quick-wit and kind disposition make training easier than most owners would expect. With the right guidance and effort, you can take your companion from a novice learner to an ace hunter!
