Flat-Coated Retriever

The Flat Coated Retriever, a majestic large breed of working dog developed to retrieve game during shoots on both land and sea, has been increasingly kept as cherished canine companions. Not only is this lovable retriever incredibly easy and fun to train thanks to its eagerness for pleasing people, but it’s also exuberantly energetic with an insatiable desire for retrieving – especially from water! The Flat Coated is similar to the golden retriever in many ways, at one point the Golden even competed in shows as part of the subgroup within Flat Coated Retrievers.

Flat Coats are renowned for their zealous puppy energy and having a Flat Coat as part of your family requires a sense of humor. Besides size (large) and shedding (plenty), the Flat Coated Retriever is an outstanding pet that never fails to make its presence known with wetness! The breed was originally developed due to its excellent working retrieval capabilities, but today many members serve as active companions both at home and out in the field on weekends.

The Flat Coated Retriever is an especially active breed, bred for hunting and other physical activities. Those who are enthused about running, hiking or cross-country skiing will find this pup to be the perfect companion! Not only do they excel at agility competitions but love dock-diving too. All in all, these dogs simply can’t get enough of being active!

Do not discount the working heritage of these dogs: if neglected in terms of training, socialization and exercise each day, their natural enthusiasm – particularly as juveniles or young adults – can be too much to handle.

Flat Coats boast a sleek, straight coat that requires frequent bathing and brushing to keep it clean – especially since most of these pups can’t help but romps through every mud hole they encounter.

Flat Coats are incredibly affectionate towards people, but this can sometimes lead to them jumping up as a form of greeting. Early obedience training is essential for these lively pooches in order to ensure they remain obedient when full-grown. Lucky for us, Flat Coats take well to training and the investment you put into it from an early age will really pay off! With consistent lessons you’ll have your pup sitting on command, walking without pulling on the leash and coming back whenever called—making for a much more enjoyable time spent together!
