Bavarian Mountain Hound

For around the last 150 years, Bavarian Mountain Hounds, or BMD, have been on a quest to hunt down large game in Germany’s Bavarian mountains. Bred for their exceptionally keen sense of smell and fearlessness, this composed member of the hound group is known to stay calm even under extreme pressure.

Having a reputation for unwavering devotion and loyalty, it’s no wonder that the once obscure breed is becoming increasingly popular as a pet. Notoriously shy around strangers, this dog has an even-tempered personality making them perfect for families with kids alike. Its reliability and unruffled nature make it almost impossible to resist!

Nineteenth century Germany, like other large European countries at the time, experienced a deep-seated social upheaval that would ultimately lead to substantial reforms. One of these changes allowed for more widespread hunting participation by members of all classes–not just those with privilege and power–resulting in an exponential increase in demand for hunting dogs.

In Southern Germany, two scenthounds – the Bavarian Hound and the Hanoverian Hound – existed yet failed to meet the expectations of mountain hunters. At that time, firearms were not as sophisticated so a hunter’s shot rarely achieved a clean kill on large game like deer; therefore necessitating an animal with superior tracking skills over lengthy distances in order to chase down its prey until it was too weak to move any further.

By merging two existing breeds, the resilient Bavarian Mountain Hound was born – characterized by its remarkable strength and stamina along with an incredible ability to persevere through pain. When in work mode, this pup prefers to be attached at a long leash’s end instead of following alongside its owner. This independence is mirrored in their independent personalities as well!

The Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound boasts colors of brindle, reddish brown, and tan. Moreover, their coat is sometimes a pale yellow or tan with hues ranging from light to dark red. Their fur is close-fitting to the body and not overly glossy; in fact they are an ideal choice for those who suffer from allergies due to its density! Grooming these delightful pups requires little effort – only a weekly brushing should suffice.

The Bavarian Mountain Dog is an ideal pet for children given its placid nature and high pain tolerance. For this breed to learn how to interact with young ones, it should be raised in a family environment from the start. This canine can manage times of being alone but should never be forced to live outside since it’s very people-focused – regular playtime with other dogs won’t suffice for them. In some cases, they may even show signs of aloofness towards their own kind!

Although cats and other small animals are often seen as potential prey, it can be safe to keep them in the home. This breed is known for being reserved around unfamiliar people; while this makes them not ideal guard dogs due to their lack of protective or territorial instincts, they will eventually warm up to those with whom they are more familiar.

The Bavarian Mountain Dog can be quickly trained by experienced owners through positive reinforcement, though it is known for its occasional stubbornness that may prove a challenge to novice pet parents. To bring out the best in your pup, patience and assertiveness are key; irritation from an owner will cause the dog’s enthusiasm to fade fast!

The Bavarian Mountain Dog is an active and energetic breed; it loves spending its time outdoors, preferably in a mountainous environment. If you wish to own one of these impressive canines, be aware that due to the high level of exercise they need daily, couch potatoes do not make suitable owners! The best way for a BMD owner to ensure their dog gets adequate physical activity is having at least two people willing to take them outside throughout the day as it’s hard for them to over-exercise – unless during very hot weather.
