Australian Terrier

The Australian Terrier, also affectionately known as ‘Aussie’, is the first native dog breed registered in Australia. Although he may be small in stature compared to other working terriers, his personality definitely makes up for it. He’s bold and courageous with a strong willed independent streak; traits which served him well when he was originally bred to control vermin on early settlers homesteads. In addition to these traits that are common among terriers, he also prefers staying indoors with company rather than living in an outdoor kennel. Australian Terriers have a reputation for getting attached to their people and being sympathetic towards their emotions.

Many people fall in love with the Australian Terrier at first sight because of their cuteness, but what owner’s don’t realize is just how clever and active they truly are. For those who come to know and love this breed, their “down under” attitude only becomes more appealing over time. If you live with an Australian Terrier, be prepared for a lot of laughter since they find typical terrier hobbies — digging, barking, and chasing the family cat— extremely amusing.

The Australian Terrier is a versatile breed that can adapt to many types of living situations, from city apartments to rural farmhouses. As with all terriers, it’s important to start training early so that their natural energy and curiosity are channeled into constructive activities. Otherwise, a bored Australian Terrier will likely become destructive by digging holes or jumping fences.

Apartment or condo living is the Australian Terrier’s perfect habitat, however only if you can train him to control his barking, or be there yourself to keep it at a minimum. These small dogs are excellent watchdogs; though your neighbors might describe them as ‘nuisance barkers’.

Confident and independent, Australian Terriers are natural born leaders–but that might not be a good thing if you have other pets. Because they like to assert their dominance, Ausies don’t generally get along with either cats or other dogs–especially if both are male. And since marking their territory is also part of asserting their alpha status, belly bands to block the pee from hitting your furniture may become a common sight in your home.

Although show dogs get more delicate grooming, pet Australian Terriers have easy-to-care-for coats that come in several colors. Just give them an occassional bath and comb or brush their fur once a week to reduce shedding. They’re not meant to live outside, so keep them indoors as part of your family.
