Appenzeller Sennenhund

The Appenzeller Sennenhund is one of four iconic Swiss mountain dogs, famous for their athleticism and unwavering loyalty. Initially used to herd livestock and pull carts in the countryside, this breed now makes an ideal pet companion. Although not yet widely popular outside its homeland of Switzerland, it’s high time that more people discover what an incredible animal the Appenzeller Sennenhund is! It embodies all the best qualities a canine partner could offer – intelligent work ethic combined with strong family values – making it truly deserving of more recognition.

Originating from the picturesque, mountainous terrain of Appenzell in Switzerland, the Appenzeller Sennenhund or otherwise known as the Appenzeller Mountain Dog is speculated to be a very ancient breed. Although officially documented only by 19th century records, historians theorize that this majestic breed has existed much longer than that.

Despite their remote existence, and the lack of historically accurate record-keeping, many people have traced their ancestral roots back to ancient alpine dogs thousands of years ago. Although this has not been officially confirmed as accurate before 1850, archaeologists have discovered remains suggesting similar type canine species that far predate written records.

Appenzellers sport a lustrous black or brown topcoat, embellished with symmetrical tan markings above their eyes and on the cheeks, chest and legs. Additionally, they flaunt an exquisite white blaze across their face accompanied by an elongated streak of white from chin to chest along with four snow-white feet that culminate in a dazzling tail tip. Underneath this glamorous exterior lies a luxurious undercoat in shades of black, brown or gray.

Commonly known as the ‘one-person dog’, this breed of canine is extremely loyal and devoted to its owners. They usually develop a strong bond with one individual within the family unit, which often leads them to be willing to put their own safety at risk in order to protect their loved ones. While well socialized specimens are great companions for children, it is essential that you keep close supervision due to these dogs’ immense strength – chasing or nipping smaller animals might happen if they exhibit herding instincts.

Though these dogs can excel in nearly any task, they are certainly not a piece of cake to train. They will often test their trainer and require consistent yet stern instruction to reach their highest capability. At times strong-willed and stubborn, it usually takes an experienced handler to be the leader in this relationship. It is quite natural for them to attempt becoming dominant so that behavior must be discouraged, especially when they become adolescents trying out the limits.

The Appenzeller Sennenhund is an incredibly athletic breed, with remarkable physical strength and stamina. Therefore, they require more than the usual amount of exercise; at least one hour of brisk walking each day should be included in their daily routine. In addition to regular walks, providing stimulating activities that challenge them mentally will help keep these dogs satisfied and fulfilled. Contrary to other breeds who only need short occasional walks off-leash outdoors for adequate exercise, this breed needs plenty of fresh air every day!
