Bluetick Coonhound

The Bluetick Coonhound is a scent hound that originates from the state of Louisiana. They are agile and attentive dogs who love to work and can easily become bored if they don’t have a task to complete. This breed can be highly vocal, often howling at someone they first meet. However, this should not be mistaken for aggression, as Bluetick Coonhounds are generally friendly dogs that can adapt well to most households.

The Bluetick has an adorable, pitiful face that all hounds share which makes them so tough to resist. They become extra attached to their human family and love car rides and lying at the foot of the bed during storms. Usually, they are friendly and content but, like any dog, each one is different. Some may be shy while others suspicious of new people. They’re great with kids but if you have small children at home, it might be best to adopt an adult rather than a puppy since they can get pretty rowdy.

The Bluetick Coonhound is good looking, intelligent, sensitive and loving. Originally a color variety of the English Coonhound, the breed stands out for his dark blue, thickly mottled color with black spots on his back, ears and sides. If you’re interested in acquiring one of these friendly dogs, here’s what else you need to know about them.

Blueticks are social creatures that get along well with other animals, including cats. They love to hunt squirrels in the backyard and need a couple of long walks each day to help meet their exercise needs. In addition, they’ll appreciate the opportunity to run safely in an enclosed area once or twice a week. Keep in mind that a tired Bluetick is usually a good Bluetick.

A Bluetick needs to be on a leash when outdoors, so he doesn’t run away after smelling something interesting. If you’re not home, he also should have access to a securely fenced yard. Additionally, since Blueticks love to hunt, they will go explore if given the opportunity.

The Bluetick’s height ranges from 21 to 27 inches for females (who are generally smaller) and

45 to 80 pounds. They have a smooth coat that requires little upkeep- only weekly brushing with a rubber curry comb, in addition to regular nail trimming, ear cleaning and tooth brushing.

Although they make good hunting and home companions, there are a few things to keep in mind before getting a Bluetick. For one, their bay can be jarringly loud; it’s important to factor in how close your neighbors live when considering this breed. Additionally, Blueticks have an unmistakable musty scent that regular baths may do little to fix – something to keep in mind if you’re particularly sensitive to smells. Finally,Blueticks require early training with positive reinforcement tactics like food rewards – they love treats!
