Greyhound

Greyhounds are one of the oldest and most impressive dog breeds, known for their size, strength, and athleticism. The Greyhound or English Greyhound is a sighthound that was initially bred to chase hares in pursuit. It’s important not to confuse them with Italian Greyhounds – which come from Europe but are much smaller than an English breed!

The Greyhound’s impressive athleticism and ability to reach exceptionally high speeds make them a popular breed for racing. Although they are still used in coursing and racing today, their lovable nature makes them an ideal companion as well. They have placid temperaments and show great devotion towards humans; however, this same enthusiasm can lead to chasing small animals if not properly trained. Before allowing your dog off-leash in any open space, be sure that appropriate training methods have been utilized!

The Greyhound’s short, fine coat requires minimal grooming and is low maintenance. As this breed carries little fat and their coats provide hardly any insulation against the cold, they can be quite sensitive to colder weather conditions. Although usually robustly healthy, some health problems may affect them.

Greyhounds are known for their speed, strength and agility on the racetrack. However, these dogs have also proven themselves capable of adapting wonderfully to a city setting. Affectionately dubbed as the 40-mph-couch potato, Greyhounds make ideal pets due to their pleasant demeanor – they may be large but they possess a quiet nature and love snuggling up with you on your comfortable couch. Furthermore, 20 minutes of daily exercise is enough for them; no matter if it’s in an urban apartment or in the largest home out in the countryside!

The Greyhound is an incredibly low-maintenance breed. His glossy coat can come in a wide array of colors and patterns, although he does shed, he only requires minimal grooming. All that’s necessary is to give him a weekly brushing, the occasional bath when they get too messy or dirty, regular nail clipping and ear cleaning – easy!

While a small portion of Greyhounds are bred for show, the vast majority found in American homes are former racers. In fact, there are more ex-racing dogs than greyhounds still racing today! If you’re looking to adopt a Greyhound into your family, then consider one retiring from the racetrack as most Greyhounds are bred purely for racing and many ex-racers are in need of a loving home!
