Deutscher Wachtelhund

In the late 1800s, German hunters sought to revive a classic hunting breed that dates all the way back to the early 1700s: The Stoeberer. An extraordinary tracking dog akin to a Bloodhound in its abilities, they uncovered remnants of this special lineage among Bavarian hounds and combined them with other naturally talented sporting Spaniels. Thus was born their beloved Valk-tel-hund or quail dog which officially gained recognition as its own pure breed by 1903.

Nowadays, Deutscher Wachtelhunds in Germany are largely owned by professional hunters and foresters. Nevertheless, a few have been brought over to Canada while the number of them present in the United States is even lesser.

The Deutscher Wachtelhund is an amazing breed with a coat that comes in solid brown or red to dark and ticked with white patches (called schimmel). Their medium-length coat is thick, dense, and slightly harsh to the touch. You may find some feathering around their legs and tail as well! These pups typically have a wavy or curly texture but are unfortunately not suitable for people with allergies due to heavy shedding – so weekly brushing is essential for keeping them looking like kings (and queens)!

Deutscher Wachtelhunds are perfect for hunters and trail seekers, as their energy level is through the roof! While these dogs enjoy outdoor activities, they also love being around people. Although friendly to all acquaintances, Deutscher Wachtelhund will alert you if someone unfamiliar is lurking on your property by barking. But don’t worry — this breed isn’t yappy; it only barks occasionally. While mostly owned by individuals who hunt or work in forestry fields, these canines are incredibly versatile and make great companion animals!

When hunting, Deutscher Wachtelhunds show impressive tenacity and assertiveness; yet they are both friendly and social in a home setting. If you’re intent on training one of these dogs, it’s essential to be serenely confident so that the pup understands who is in charge – YOU!

The Deutscher Wachtelhund is an affectionate, medium-to-large sized canine and a great companion for children of all ages. They will adjust to being played with depending on the maturity level and behavior that your child displays towards them. For those kids who learn how to approach such breeds in their early stages, this dog can be a fantastic source of entertainment as well as companionship!

In terms of cohabitation with other pets, the Deutscher Wachtelhund can be friendly toward them as long as they are introduced slowly and carefully. Early socialization is key to facilitate this process in a harmonious way.
