This is the first step to joining our Mt. Tabor Pack walks!
This is a leash handling 101 class designed to help you with the basics of communicating with your dog and achieving a loose leash on your walks. My goal is to provide you with the tools needed to confidently join the larger group. At the end of the class we will be able to decide if you and your dog should continue working on loose leash walking in lower distraction environments or if you are ready to join the larger group. If your pup is overstimulated for the pack walk with the larger group, they will not benefit from it. I look forward to meeting you and your pup!
WHEN YOU ARRIVE…..
Please go through the open gate and park. Please wait to take your dogs out of the car until I give further instruction. Humans you may get out and introduce yourselves! Once you get the go ahead to get your dog out of your car please allow each other space to get grounded and connected with your pup. Please also have walking gear and treat pouches on (loaded with high value treats) when you leave your house! This will help you be prepared to start guiding your dog the moment you open the door. I look forward to seeing everyone!
THE BIG PACK GOAL!
The larger pack provides an opportunity to walk a 90 minute, preplanned route with 3 training stops. It is important for both handler and dog to feel comfortable moving forward to get all the benefits pack walk offers.
******Bring a treat pouch FULL of HIGH VALUE treats. We will need a full pouch and I suggest skipping breakfast!
High value treat ideas…..
-Rawbbles is a great freeze dried option that is also a complete meal.
-Cubed and boiled chicken is great because if cubed prior to boiling it won’t shred making it easy to grab!
-K-9 essentials freeze dried tripe is VERY high value!
Dogs will appear to be picky eaters when they in actuality have anxiety. Confidence building will lower anxiety as the class goes on.
***Leashes must be fixed 4-6ft.***
***Options for walking gear (if you are clipping to something other than the flat collar) include front clip harness, nose lead, or a Sprenger collar. If you are using a harness with only a back clip option you may nice it is harder to get pulling under control and it is simply because your dogs shoulders are the strongest part of their bodies!***
**Please note: To have an effective class we need a minimum of three (3) people registered, not including the host. Classes with less than three attendees will be rescheduled. Please check the attendee count and messages BEFORE you head to the class. We will do our best to notify you the Friday evening before the event if we are going to cancel due to low turnout.**
We look forward to seeing you there and we are here if you have any additional questions. To learn more about our private training and socialization options, check out our website at http://www.thebalanceddogpdx.com
