Perro de Presa Canario

Despite its notorious reputation, the Perro de Presa Canario (or Canary Mastiff) can indeed be a loyal and caring companion with adequate socialization and training. Unfortunately, they are often in the news for all of the wrong reasons due to fatal dog attacks that arise from irresponsible breeding or inadequate care. But if raised properly, these powerful pooches have tremendous potential as gentle family pets.
The Canary Island Mastiff is a large, athletic breed that has an impressively big head and originates from the Canary Islands. Their general disposition is quite calm, so they don’t need too much exercise; but despite this relaxed attitude, if the situation requires it these dogs will become alert and ready to react aggressively in order to protect their family or territory.
Previously, farmers used this breed to protect their livestock and exterminate wild dogs on the property. Nowadays, however, these animals are largely utilized by those engaged in dog fighting – a barbaric pastime that most countries have already prohibited but is still difficult for authorities to completely eliminate.
The Perro de Presa Canario is an incredibly loyal dog to its owner and can be very defensive if needed. With their suspicions of strangers, deep bark, and willingness to become violent when they sense danger, these dogs make great guard animals while protecting your territory with confidence. Despite this strong-willed independence, the breed will show respect for those in its family circle; loving them deeply and providing gentle companionship that is truly indescribable!
The Presa Canario is not an ideal choice for a novice trainer, and should always be handled with respect. This breed requires dedication, patience, and the ability to assert dominance in order to maintain control of their behavior. It’s important to never underestimate the obligation of providing ongoing obedience training throughout its life – it will make all the difference when raising this powerful animal.
The Presa Canario is an imposing breed, so they require a substantial amount of space – preferably in the form of a well-secured yard. Don’t be mistaken though, this species loves its daily walks and should never be taken out by kids due to their potentially aggressive nature when confronted with other animals or potential prey.
To maintain their sleek coats, Presa Canarios require just a simple once-weekly brushing session. Shedding is kept to a minimum with this breed, so don’t worry about having hair all over your home! To ensure they are well-behaved and cooperative pets, it’s essential that these dogs get accustomed to regular tasks like bathing and nail clipping as early in life as possible.
