Norwegian Lundehund

The Norwegian Lundehund, a petite and attractive breed, was once used to hunt puffin birds from their local cliffside homes. Nowadays these friendly creatures are gaining more love throughout Norway and around the world for their sweet personalities, gentleness with small children, as well as being very compatible with other pets in the home.

With its distinct Spitz features — namely the pointed ears, wedge-shaped head and furry tail curving over its back – along with a double coat in beige to tan or reddish brown hues tipped off by black hair ends and white markings or vice versa, the Norwegian Lundehund is truly one odd yet captivating canine. Each individual dog has an energetic personality full of surprises; there’s no telling when they’ll whip out their contortionist tricks!

The “Puffin Dog,” as this breed of canine is known in Norwegian, showcases an array of special features. With six toes on each foot and triple or double joints in the front legs, his position naturally manifests itself into a 90-degree east-west angle. The flexibility of his shoulders grants him the ability to stretch those forelegs outwards for balance, whilst his head can bend back so far he almost kisses the ground with it. His prick ears close seamlessly and can be folded forward or backward at will – truly marveling any onlooker!

With his quirky characteristics, the Lundehund was bred to climb rocky cliffs on Norwegian islands and pluck live puffins. His remarkable physical structure allows him not only to grip surfaces but also squeeze into tight openings. While he may appear delightful at first glance, this lively pup has a complex personality and an abundance of energy – making it essential for owners to provide ample mental stimulation!

Lundehunds are usually playful and inquisitive, with an extraordinary physical build that enables them to explore small cracks and tight spots like no other canines. Therefore, it is essential to be very observant of what the Lundehund may try to investigate–and make sure there are no hazardous places they can access if necessary.

The Lundehund’s agility and athletic ability enable it to turn sharply with ease, making them natural contenders in sports such as flyball or agility. This breed requires frequent exercise; strive for at least two thirty-minute walks a day plus regular playtime to maintain their physical health. Not only that, the companionship will solidify your bond with this loving canine companion!

A great attribute of the Lundehund is their generally content and relaxed temperament. Nevertheless, life with them does necessitate substantial modifications to your lifestyle as well as home setting. In addition, regular veterinary visits are likely expected along with an unfortunately short lifespan. Thus, it’s best to firmly weigh all aspects before deciding on acquiring one of these rare dogs.
