It’s thought that the breed was created during the Victorian era, a combination of Landseer Newfoundland and longhaired Saint Bernard initially with Pyrenean Mountain Dog and further St. Bernards added to its ancestry.

The Leonberger is a loyal and loving companion for any family, although his large size, excessive fur shedding, and potential to cause destruction if neglected require extra attention. Furthermore, as with all giant breeds of dogs, the Leonberger has genetic predispositions to various illnesses that limit their life expectancy to only six to eight years.
