Keeshond
The Netherlands’ national dog, the Keeshond, has been historically bred and carefully chosen to become an ultimate companion for its owners in tightly confined barges. Not only does it make a phenomenal guard with their intimidating bark when excited; but they possess an incredibly insulated silver and black coat that shields them both warm and cold climates – this luxurious coat as well as the voluminous curly tail are features of all Spitz family dogs. Surprisingly enough, maintaining this beautiful fur is surprisingly easy!
Keeshonds are incredibly intelligent and make for easy, enjoyable training. Their traditional living conditions mean that these dogs can also live comfortably in a sedentary lifestyle such as apartment living. However, it is important to be aware of the potential health issues associated with this breed; any prospective owner should confirm the family history when selecting their pup from a litter. If healthy, Keeshonds have an impressive life expectancy of 12–14 years!
The Keeshond is the perfect medium-sized dog for anyone looking for a devoted companion. Not only are they extremely loyal, but their unique eyeglass markings make them stand out in any crowd! Despite being bred to guard barges originally, these pooches require relatively low amounts of exercise and simply enjoy spending time with you. With an endless smile on his face and cheerful disposition, this pup loves nothing more than bonding with its family – even children! Plus, he’s known to be friendly towards strangers too, so you won’t have to worry about introducing your four-legged friend into social settings either.
As a barge dog, the Keeshond requires just enough exercise to be content: a quick walk on-leash or some playtime in an open area. This makes him ideal for apartment life–the only caveat being his tendency to bark. The solution is easy; training this breed when it’s appropriate (and not) to vocalize ensures they make great watchdogs without becoming unbearable nuisances! For protection and comfort, the Keeshond is best suited to living indoors. His sensitivity to high temperatures makes outdoor conditions unsafe for him when the weather heats up.
Kees puppies are like any other pups and love to chew—so make sure you’re tidying up after yourself, as well as stocking up on plenty of robust chews that can keep him entertained. They also adore playing in water, swiping their tiny paws through the bowl or even splashing around! Additionally, be wary of your Keeshond’s digging habit; he may dig holes wherever he goes if there is a chance for mice and moles beneath the surface.
To train the clever, but sometimes willful Kees requires patience and persistence. As repetition can quickly bore him, it’s best to keep sessions brief yet entertaining for maximum results. Don’t be astonished if he deviates from commands or outsmarts you in other situations – such is his inquisitive nature! Positive reinforcement techniques like compliments, playtime, and treats are key components of a successful training regime. With the right motivation behind him, Kees will excel at agility courses as well as obedience and rally competitions; not forgetting that he makes an exemplary therapy dog too!
