Hamiltonstovare (Hamilton Hound)
In Sweden, hunting was a luxury preserved for the nobility until 1789. When it became legal for peasants to hunt as well, there was an immediate surge in demand for dogs bred especially for this purpose – with scenthounds becoming cherished companions of fox and boar hunters alike.
During their military operations abroad, Swedish soldiers of the previous two centuries returned home with a variety of continental European dogs. In 1886, nearly 200 such hounds were showcased at Sweden’s inaugural dog show–two particularly remarkable canines named Pang and Stella belonging to Count Adolf Patrik Hamilton are believed to be the earliest ancestors of this breed.
In combination with Pang and Stella, the Count is speculated to have utilized several other scenthounds – such as Bloodhound, Foxhound, and Harrier – in order to develop this novel breed that had an impressive sense of smell, natural hunting skillset plus high levels of endurance. Initially referred to as Swedish Hound back in 1910 when it was first unveiled by the count himself; 11 years post his demise in 1921 the breed was respectfully renamed Hamiltonstövare after its creator.
The Hamiltonstövare is a joyous, mild-tempered breed of dog that can be quite skittish if not given enough mental and physical stimulation. It possesses an immense amount of energy yet remains affectionate towards humans—all traits that make it unsuitable for guarding duties but its loud bay could potentially scare away intruders.
The Hamiltonstovare is an independent dog with a dignified and confident demeanor, which can result in it challenging its owner during adolescence. For this reason, the breed needs an experienced person who understands how to tackle such behavior. But when appropriately managed, the Hamiltonstovare is gentle and intelligent; forming strong bonds with children especially if given proper socialization training from puppyhood. Nevertheless, be sure never to mix your Hamiltonstovare with smaller non-canine pets as they may stimulate its hunting instincts.Yet, Hamiltonstovares can easily acclimate to other dogs and cats. Ultimately, how they act with those animals is based on their training, socialization, and luck.
The Hamiltonstovare is unique in its blend of tan, black and white markings that adorn their head, ears and legs. Their short haired coat has a distinct hound characteristic to it; while the fur on the face, neck & collar area can be thick and slightly longer compared to other parts like the back of thighs or under tail which have noticeably long hairs. Due to its relatively low maintenance grooming needs, this pup requires only an occasional brushing each week for upkeep – making them quite easy as far as pets go!
The Hamiltonstövare is specifically bred to be an active and fit working dog. While normally tranquil in the home, this breed requires two extensive walks a day for optimum physical activity as well as keeping off extra weight.
