English Shepherd

From the seventeenth century, British settlers of America imported breeds to fulfill multiple roles for smallholder farmers who could not afford more than one farm pup. The English Shepherd was born from these imported breeds as a multi-functional dog that would guard against predators and intruders, hunt with its master, eliminate rodents – but most importantly herd livestock! Also referred to as the Farm Shepherd, Farm Collie, or Scotch Collie, The English Shepherd is mostly kept by farmers in the East and Midwest of America.

Requiring a canine with adaptability, intelligence and the ability to act independently while still following instructions from its handler, there was no interest in gaining Kennel Club recognition for this breed. Rather than prioritizing standardization of its appearance or other qualities like many other working breeds, the usefulness it provides on farms was seen as more important. Although somewhat variable in temperament, these dogs are often devoted to one person and may be cautious around strangers due to their sharp minds and headstrong nature. Sizes and shapes can vary greatly too!

Boasting the same general physicality as their Border Collie relatives, English Shepherds are more substantial in build. However, if you want to differentiate one from another, then observe them herding. While the Border Collie will crouch and use a fixed stare while herding, the English Shepherd is has a loose eyed manner and an upright stance. This breed of dog is extremely versatile and able to work with a variety of animals, from cattle and sheep to pigs, poultry, and more. What’s even better is that it understands how much force to use depending on the species– ensuring optimal handling for all creatures!

The English Shepherd is not ideal for households that remain deserted during the day, as they struggle to cope with separation from their people. As expected of farm breeds, this breed may be guarded around strangers but can become pleasant companions when properly socialized; while it makes a great watchdog, aggression should rarely arise. Therefore, proper introduction and early socialization are essential in order to ensure that your English Shepherd becomes an endearing member of your family!

English Shepherds are highly responsive during training, and by nature understand what is asked of them in every situation. Yet it’s up to the owners to ensure that their furry friends remain engaged throughout—not easy when you’re dealing with intelligence as vast as this breed possesses! Giving your pup a job or task like bringing the groceries inside or retrieving mail will provide greater satisfaction than simply responding to basic commands; but if they’re going to realize their full potential, these canines need either challenging work tasks or canine sports activities.

The English Shepherd is renowned for its high energy levels when doing work, yet it also has the capability to be placid and relaxed upon demand. To achieve this balance at nightfall, two hours of well-structured activity must take place throughout the day. Most dogs are content with much more exercise than that if given the chance; activities such as walking, running, swimming and working can all assist in meeting these needs!

The simple maintenance of the coarse coat can be easily managed; even if your pup runs through mud, it will dry out quickly and brushing away any excess dirt is a breeze. During spring and autumn when shedding may increase, it’s beneficial to brush your pooch twice weekly so that dead hair won’t find its way onto furniture or other household items. You’ll never need to bother with bathing as this breed almost never requires one!
