Dogue de Bordeaux (French Mastiff)

The Dogue de Bordeaux is an enormous, loyal companion who will fiercely protect their family if needed. Although this gentle giant exudes a calm demeanor in the home and loves children, it’s important for them to have an assertive owner that can direct their instincts as guard dogs accordingly. When properly cared for, these big pups are fairly low maintenance but tend to be heavy droolers, shedders, and snorers. They are also sensitive to temperature extremes.

We were charmed by Dogue de Bordeaux when they stole the show from Tom Hanks in 1989’s classic “Turner and Hooch”. Since then, these majestic creatures have made their way into our hearts and homes. This breed is a relative of the Mastiff and can be identified by its impressively large head, powerful body as well as an intense expression on its heavily furrowed face. Its character varies; it might be distant or outgoing with a humorous side to boot! The Bordeaux was initially bred for protection but now serves mainly companionship– often competing at dog shows.

The DDB is loyal and brave, yet not necessarily an easy pup to maintain. As robust and obstinate in nature, he requires a dominant owner with the know-how to train him firmly but fairly. Additionally, exposing your pet at a young age to different environments and people will be key in maintaining his manageable behavior; otherwise, he could become aggressive towards other canines or unmanageable for novice owners.

The Bordeaux is not a breed that should be kept outdoors; he loves the company of his people, so don’t be surprised if you find him cuddled up with you on your sofa or bed! As well as being affectionate, this particular breed also has a short nose (brachycephalic) which makes it difficult for them to regulate their body temperature by panting. For this reason, ensure they always stay in air-conditioned comfort and are never left in direct sunlight. It’s important to remember that when exposed to extreme heat during exercise routines, these breeds can unfortunately die quite quickly – keep your pup safe at all times!

The DDB is a laid-back and sluggish breed of dog, except when he needs to serve as an attentive guardian. He loves nothing more than snoozing the day away, yet still has enough energy for occasional walks or playful activities. Get him something interesting like a frisbee to chase around! You might even be surprised at how talented your pup can be in agility competitions or weight pulling events–some may even become therapy dogs!

The Bordeaux is a gentle and protective breed around small children, and his relaxed personality makes him an unlikely risk to send toddlers sprawling. However, always take precaution when leaving any dog alone with kids; no matter the size of your furry friend. Furthermore, if you bring up the Bordeaux from puppyhood alongside other cats or dogs in your home, he will get along well with them as they grow together!
