Dandie Dinmont Terrier

An energetic, adoring and headstrong pup, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier was originally bred in the border country for hunting. This breed is usually healthy and does not shed which means it needs regular brushing and stripping every now and then. It can easily adjust to different lifestyles provided that it gets a lot of physical activity as well as cognitive stimulation.

The Dandie Dinmont takes its name from Sir Walter Scott’s “Guy Mannering,” and it is most certainly a dandy breed. With their signature poufy topknots, dark shoe-button eyes, and an air of self-assurance – these furry fellows are the gentlemans’ choice amongst all Terrier breeds. Though they may be more composed than other terriers, when given the opportunity to chase after small animals such as rats or squirrels, their inner earthdog comes out full force! Around those he knows well; however, this pup displays affectionate behavior with comical antics. To strangers? Well, you can expect dignified reserve at best – so don’t approach too quickly!

The Dandie boasts an impressive display of features which make him easily recognizable, including a long and low body frame, a large head with silky topknot, “scimitar” style tail that curves like a sword upwards; and two unique coat colors: “pepper” (dark bluish black to light silvery gray with white topknot/ear feathering & tan legs/feet) or “mustard” (reddish brown to pale fawn with creamy-white topknot/ear feathering & darker tinged legs/feet). His average size of 18 – 24 pounds makes it easy for the Dandie fit into most homes adequately – even apartments!

The Dandie enjoys moderate activity, so it’s important to take him for a long walk or playtime in an area without any traffic. After his daily needs are met, he will be content just lying beside you or even accompany you during your regular activities. His alert nature makes him a great watchdog and he’ll sound the alarm upon spotting either friends or foes. But wait – there’s more! He is also very effective at getting rid of mice, rats, and other rodents that might choose to make their home around yours.

Guide your Dandie with fairness, consistency and firmness, plus lavish him or her in positive reinforcement such as verbal praise, playtime and food rewards. While generally quieter than the average terrier – it’s important to teach when barking is acceptable behavior and when quietude should be observed. This will help ensure that their vocal cords do not become an unwanted nuisance!

Dandie Dinmont Terriers are known to be an excellent companion for children, provided they have been raised with them. To ensure the safety of both your dog and children, it is important that you maintain supervision when they interact. If your Dandies were brought up in a home alongside cats from a young age, then cohabitation between them should not be too much of an issue; however outdoor cats must fend for themselves!

Construction of a sturdy fence is the best way to keep your Dandie Dinmont contained in your yard. Although underground electronic fences can be employed, they may not prove effective should he become enticed by something which catches his eye and compels him to pursue it. Taking into account that terriers are renowned for their digging abilities, designating an area specifically for this purpose will prevent any unwelcomed landscaping projects on behalf of your pet!
