Clumber Spaniel

The majestic Clumber Spaniel is the largest of all Spaniels and has a medium to large-sized body. Despite their past as sporting breeds, they don’t necessitate an excessive amount of exercise; however, this does not make them lazy dogs either! Beneath their gentle demeanor lies a witty sense of humor. While he may possess soulful eyes and a big head that tricks you into thinking he’s part Saint Bernard / Bloodhound crossbreed – two things are for certain: He sheds abundantly and slobbers profusely!

This proud spaniel exudes joy as he searches through dense foliage in order to locate birds for his master. Just like any other pet, a Clumber responds well when affection and companionship are part of its upbringing; thereby making it the perfect family pup. Despite their enthusiasm and spirit, puppies may be too active around smaller children so parents should monitor playtime carefully.

Don’t let the “retired gentleman’s spaniel” nickname fool you – Clumbers may seem lazy, but they actually possess quite a mischievous streak. When it comes to food, these canines are particularly fond of rummaging through pantries and refrigerators in search of snacks; as such, most owners have taken to locking their trash cans and cabinets for safety! Unfortunately, even with precautions like this in place, items like dish towels or chew toys often slip by unnoticed- leading to gastrointestinal issues that require surgery.

If you’re a neat freak, the Clumber might not be for you. Just like most dogs, he loves to slobber and shed hair everywhere! These pups also possess an unruly streak; when left unattended they can – quite literally – tear through your home. Train him well from a young age and avoid leaving him alone until adulthood if possible. Potty training is generally effortless with these pooches but take note that some may suffer from submissive urination.

The Clumber is an incredibly versatile breed, as it can adapt to numerous activities from gentle strolls and hikes to various dog sports. Unlike more active breeds, you won’t have to worry about the need for intense levels of exercise or running with the Clumber; simply moderate daily walks will suffice! Furthermore, once your pup leaps over a baby gate for their first time, you may find yourself inspired and eager to sign them up for agility training.

Clumbers are proficient in a range of activities including hunt tests, freestyle, obedience, rally and tracking. They also have an innate ability to pick up retrieving quickly which is highly advantageous for hunters and children who love playing ball. With maturity, Clumbers make excellent therapy dogs because they have such composed temperaments!
