Chinook
The Chinook, the official state dog of New Hampshire, is an uncommon breed in its homeland and even rarer across the globe. Originally a sled dog, it has since become treasured as a pet for its calm demeanor and loyalty to those who love them. Although not yet recognized by any major kennel clubs, this pup boasts an extensive history with devoted breeders striving towards show status for their beloved four-legged friend.
Arthur Treadwell Walden of Wonalancet, New Hampshire gave us this distinct and rare breed of sled dog when he bred a farm dog with an unknown background and a “northern” husky to produce puppies that were tawny in color. Of the litter, one pup named Chinook fathered a litter with his characteristics both physical and emotional with a special fondness towards children. His kind-hearted nature is also shared among each family member who loves him dearly!
The Chinook stands out in his thick, tawny-colored double coat, dark eyes and either floppy or pricked ears alongside a saber shaped tail. Although they are powerful and active dogs requiring only moderate exercise, these canine companions treasure their time with family the most. Typically, shy with strangers but friendly once acquainted; this breed’s imposing size and strength are sure to be an effective deterrent against any trespassers!
The Chinook breed is an ideal fit for any active, outdoorsy person. With their amazing heritage as a hard-working sled dog and intelligence, they can easily learn new skills with positive reinforcement techniques. Praise, playtime, and food rewards will make them excellent hiking buddies or great competitors in sports like skijoring or agility competitions such as herding trials or rally events. If you’re looking for the perfect companion to match your outdoor lifestyle, then the Chinook should be at the top of your list!
Despite his many admirable qualities, the Chinook does come with a few considerations: He needs daily physical activity and may be challenging to manage since he is an incredibly intelligent breed. If left without stimulation for too long, a bored Chinook can become destructive as they are very fond of people.
