Chart Polski (Polish Greyhound)

The Chart Polski’s predecessors were bred to pursue hare, foxes, deer and wolves. It acquired its name ‘Chart Polski’, meaning Polish sighthound in the early 19th century but was documented for the first time as far back as 1600. The breed endured near-extinction due to Poland’s inconsistent history throughout centuries of turmoil until a few dogs managed to avoid extinction by 1980s; which is when enthusiasts started their quest towards reviving this nearly extinct species!
The Chart Polski is a strong yet slim pooch who loves sprinting. Unlike standard sighthounds, he’s remarkably defensive and territorial. He sports the slenderness of his Greyhound family with an extra layer of protection; running comes natural to him as it does for any sighthound but he additionally guards his kin and its land like no other breed in this category!
The Polish Greyhound has a magnificent and unique coat – one that is shorter, smoother, and heavier than the typical Greyhound. It comes in various colors and features an undercoat which becomes thicker when it’s cold outside. Furthermore, this breed boasts beautiful culottes (long thick fur) at the back of their thighs as well as a long brush on the tail for added flair!
On average these pup weigh between 60-90 pounds with chart polskis having particularly smooth double coats despite season making them easy to groom yet still providing excellent insulation from colder temperatures which causes their fur to be slightly bushier.
The Chart Polski is a remarkable sighthound, not only larger and heavier than the Greyhound but also with an altogether distinct temperament. Contrary to Greyhounds who are usually gentle and accommodating for new owners, the Chart Polski may be too vigorous of a companion person inexperienced in training dogs. His striking combination of speed, size, strength coupled with persistence and territorialism calls for someone confident enough to give him thorough instruction right away. Additionally, he has been known to demonstrate aggression towards other canines occasionally.
Chart Polskis are the picture of elegance, and they stand out in a show ring due to their tail-wagging enthusiasm! While at home, these sighthounds exhibit all the typical characteristics like love, devotion and composure. Due to their natural tenderness around young children Chart Polskis can be great family pets – though it’s always best practice to keep an eye on kids when they’re playing with them as these dogs naturally become stimulated by movement.
When a Chart Polski encounters its prey, such as rabbits or squirrels, it is an exceptionally adept and determined hunter. It will easily best cats, other small critters—and even puppies can learn to get along with indoor cats. The breed standard states that the dog responds “swiftly and strongly” when hunting; thus, if you have one at home be sure to advise your neighbors not to let their animals wander into your yard and build secure fencing around the area of containment.
This energetic pup loves to run, and unfortunately his penchant for chasing things could override any obedience training he received as a puppy. To ensure his safety, it’s best to take him off-leash in an area with a secure fence that will keep him from running away.
