Boykin Spaniel
The Boykin Spaniel was initially developed in South Carolina during the early 1900s. With its smaller than a typical retriever, it was created to fit into tight spaces on boats while hunting fowl and turkeys – making him the perfect water dog! He weighs only 25-40 pounds, but he is far from weak; he’s one of the best retrievers around!
This delightful brown spaniel is the perfect addition to any family. With their wavy or curly medium-length coat and thick, luscious ears, they are a sight for sore eyes! They have an approachable and amiable nature that will fit in perfectly with most children and pets alike. Plus, if you’re looking for something active – this pup won’t let you down as their high energy levels make them ideal companions who love being outdoors. A prized pet both inside and outside of the home – it doesn’t get much better than these precious pooches!
The Boykin Spaniel is the perfect pal for outdoor activities such as hunting, boating or hiking. This energetic sporting breed loves water and has an affable nature that makes it great at retrieving. Though not suitable as a watchdog—due to its gentle disposition—it does require weekly grooming sessions to maintain its curly coat in pristine condition.
The Boykin is an energetic breed that requires daily physical activity. Even if you are not a hunter, providing him with longer walks or opportunities to swim should suffice. Additionally, he would be thrilled by any sports such as agility and flyball that involve getting wet! The Boykin was originally used for hunting from boats – making them ideal dogs for canoers, kayakers and other boaters.
Some Boykin lines may to have a too eager temperament or be overly energetic, it’s best to start training and socializing them at an early age. Fortunately, these canines are intelligent animals who typically respond well when trained using gentle yet consistent methods that make the experience fun for them- think positive reinforcement through playtime, compliments, and treats!
To maintain the curly coat of this breed, it is essential to comb and brush them regularly- at least two or three times a week. Begin with a gentle combing motion in order to prevent any tangles or mats that may have formed when outside. Afterwards, use a slicker brush for efficient removal of dead hair. This should be done every time your dog has been outdoors in thick brush
To keep your pup looking their best, be sure to give them a trim every so often. After playing in saltwater or dirty algae-filled lakes and ponds, make sure to always rinse thoroughly with fresh water afterwards. In addition, regular nail trimmings are necessary along with keeping the fur between foot pads trimmed cleanly and ears dry for preventing any infections from occurring.
