Bohemian Shepherd

The Bohemian Shepherd is a medium-sized dog breed, rectangle in shape. Standing at about 19-22 inches tall at the withers and weighing approximately 35-55 lb. They have long fur which helps protect them from harsh weather conditions. The desired fur color for this breed is “black with tan.” Their body is compact and well put together with high set small ears that are pointed and erect. Another distinguishing characteristic of this bred is their fluid gait that appears light and easygoing.

The Bohemian Shepherd is an ancient sheep herding dog and watch dog originating from the Czech Republic. Since 2019, the Bohemian Shepherd has been recognized by the FCI and the AKC’s Foundation Stock Service.

The beautiful black and tan Bohemian Shepherd may look similar to the German Shepherd; however, this breed actually originates from the Czech Republic. Also known as the Chodský pes, this Sheepdog is not widely recognized outside of its homeland.

The brave and affectionate make superb family pets, particularly when well-socialised from an early age. Traditionally used for herding, its athletic ability and strong sense of smell mean it also excels in the world of search and rescue, particularly after earthquakes or avalanches. It is this mix of working ability and suitability as a companion that has ensured this breed’s respected status in the Czech Republic today.
