Boerboel

The Boerboel, which means farmer’s dog in Afrikaans, was developed by Dutch settlers in South Africa during the 17th century. These farmers needed a large dog that could protect their families and property from dangerous predators such as lions, leopards and hyenas. The Boerboel is a member of the Mastiff family and has a short coat that only moderately sheds but is easy to take care of.

The Boerboel would be a tank if he were a vehicle: designed for power over speed and a dominating figure. This gigantic dog makes for an excellent guard dog that is always confident, sometimes aggressive, and always prepared to take on anyone who steps into his territory. Outwardly, this breed is easy to spot with his cube-shaped head; broad, muscular body; and red, fawn or brown coat–sometimes with a black mask.

The Boerboel’s Mastiff roots are very clear in his appearance, such as his wrinkled forehead, muscular build, and large size. However, he is also a compassionate dog with a gentle side that comes out around those he trusts–which makes him an excellent playmate for children. Of course, there are some things to keep in mind before letting him around small kids.

The Boerboel, despite his large size, is quick and nimble. He can be quite active when still a puppy but as he matures, tends to excel in activities that require more stability and focus such as obedience trials, protection sports, rally, therapy visits etcetera. Because the Boerboel loves having a designated space of his own (and because it’s not safe for him otherwise), he needs owners who will provide him with a securely fenced yard – never let him roam free unsupervised.

The Boerboel is, unsurprisingly, often protective and territorial by nature. He is generally cautious of strangers and makes for an excellent watchdog. In order to reduce the likelihood of him becoming either shy or aggressive, socialization early on in life is pivotal. The ideal situation for a Boerboel would be living with someone experienced in dog care – somebody who will spend a good amount their time training, playing with and exercising him. Without these conditions met, the Boerboel breed poses much challenge for first-time dog owners.
