Basset Artesien Normand

The Basset Artésien Normand is a hound of medium size, deriving from the same roots as its cousins: the Basset Hound and Artois Hound. Its predecessors were impacted by genetic dwarfism which has been utilized to create today’s breeds. The distinction between the popular Basset Hound and this particular breed is that French breeders preferred to keep it sleeker and more spry with enhanced hunting capabilities over time.
Developed to accompany hunters on foot, these scent hounds are fantastic tracking dogs with the notable ability to navigate through thick shrubbery and undergrowth. Bred mainly for hunting small critters like hares or rabbits either independently or as a pack, its compact build permits it to work in areas where bigger canines would be impeded.
Today, the breed is mainly kept as a beloved companion animal and makes an ideal family pet due to its energetic and loving demeanor plus friendliness when interacting with children. Plus, it enjoys socializing with other dogs! However, be mindful that this pooch has hunting roots – so if you have cats or small animals in your home, make sure to introduce them early during puppyhood for cohabitation success.
The Basset Artésien Normand is an intelligent and spirited hound, whose happiness shines through in its eagerness to please. Not only are they incredibly loving towards their family, but this breed is also renowned for being gentle and adoring with children – making them the perfect companion for families of all kinds!
They usually get along well with other dogs too, so you don’t have to feel guilty about leaving your pup alone occasionally as long as it’s been accustomed from puppyhood. This breed does not make for the ideal watchdog, yet its amicable nature and gentle disposition towards others makes it a great family companion. However, their tendency to be vocal may pose an issue if you live in close quarters with your neighbors.
The Basset Artésien Normand is a smart and quick learner, making it an ideal breed to train. It loves pleasing its owner, so training comes with ease when you set up a consistent routine combined with ample opportunities for outdoor activities. House training can be achieved in no time at all!
With its short and close coat, the Basset Artésien Normand should feel smooth and glossy when touched. There is also minimal effort required for grooming it as regular brushing will help to rid of any excess hair shed from its body while maintaining a good condition. However, due to their long ears preventing air flow into them, they are known to be more prone towards ear infections than other breeds so proper care must be taken in order to look after them properly.
