Azawakh

The Azawakh is a beautiful, slender hound that originated from wild dogs in Africa. For generations, it has been used by African nomads as a hunting and guard dog for their camps and livestock. The Azawakh is a fiercely loyal dog that also has an independent streak, meaning it is not the best fit for everyone. Its territorial nature can be off-putting to some people, but if you are looking for a beautiful and quiet breed of dog, the Azwakh may be the perfect fit for you.

If you adopt an Azawakh, be prepared to have him as a lifetime member of your family. He does best when he lives inside with his human family and not left outdoors by himself where he will receive little attention. It’s crucial that puppies go to their forever homes at an early age; it becomes increasingly difficult to re-home them once they are older because they have difficulty adjusting. Puppies need exposure to lots of different people, places, and situations so that they become well socialized adults–this should continue throughout the dog’s life.

The Azawakh is a sighthound that, unlike most in its family, has a protective streak and will bark at strangers. The Azawakh needs regular exercise to stay conditioned. Its thin skin is stretched over a frame of muscle and bone; this aid to speed makes it especially streamlined and competitive in lure coursing–a sport where participants chase after a mechanically operated artificial prey.

All sighthounds have a strong hunting instincts, and the Azawakh is no different. He can get along well with other dogs if they are raised together from puppyhood, but small animals like cats or toy breeds of dogs will not be safe in his presence unless he has been around them since he was young. Even then, it’s best to never leave them unsupervised around each other and to always keep him on a leash when outside as he will chase any unknown cat or small animal he sees.

The Azawakh is a fit for those who live in apartments or condos, as they only require a daily walk or run of at least half an hour. They make excellent partners for joggers and runners, and are then content to spend the remainder of the day lounging on the couch. It is important to never allow them to run free except in a safely enclosed area, such as a fenced-in yard; an underground electronic fence will not suffice, as they will happily run right over it regardless of any level shock it emits.

The Azawakh is not a good dog for young children as he loves to run. Choose a different breed if you have very active kids who want a playful dog, but the Azawakh can be okay for older children who like calmer activities such as reading or playing video games. Just make sure someone in the family provides him with enough exercise .

The Azawakh doesn’t do well in cold or wet weather because of his thin skin and low level of body fat. He needs to be indoors on soft surfaces so he can rest comfortably. Azwakhs are proud and independent, but they respond best to positive reinforcement techniques. If you punish them or use heavy-handed methods, they will shut down. However, if you’re firm yet fair and provide the right motivation, they’ll learn quickly and easily.
