American Staffordshire Terrier

Although the American Staffordshire Terrier is closely related to the American Pit Bull Terrier, they have gradually become different breeds over time. The Am Staff is registered by the American Kennel Club while the APBT is not. In addition, the former breed tends to be larger; however, both types share a common personality and activity level.

The Am Staff may look like a serious and imposing dog, but he is actually gentle and loving by nature. With proper socialization, training, attention and love from his owners, the Am Staff can be a calm and affectionate family pet.

If not properly trained, this powerful dog can be difficult to walk on leash as he loves to pull. However, that same energy and strength can be turned into a positive by channeling it into a sport such as weight pulling or nose work.

American Staffordshire Bull Terriers are easy to groom; they need a few weekly brushings, clean ears, and trimmed nails.

Am Staffs sometimes fall under the category of “Pit Bulls,” which may be subject to breed-specific legislation by some cities. This can result in difficulties purchasing homeowner’s insurance, or even lead to your city outright banning the breed. Furthermore, some municipalities have ordinances specifying how a fence must be constructed if you own one of these “Pit Bull-type” breeds. To avoid any surprises down the road, make sure to research your local city ordinances and talk to your insurance provider before acquiring an Am Staff.
