American Pit Bull Terrier

The American Pit Bull Terrier is a popular breed in America. They’ve been used as military mascots, advertising stars, and common farm and family dogs. However, dog fighters criminally began to use the breed’s loyalty, tenacity and boldness for their own gains, and the Pittie’s reputation has taken a severe blow from which it is still recovering.

The APBT, or American Pit Bull Terrier, often has a scary appearance. However, they are bred to be loving family dogs that accept people. With the right owners who provide socialization, training and love, these dogs can have docile personalities and be great companions.

Although Pit Bulls typically are highly people oriented, they may not enjoy the company of other dogs or small creatures like cats. Some individual Pit Bulls may befriend cats in the household and happily play with every dog they meet, but this isn’t indicative of all members of the breed. If you’re looking for a canine companion you can take to your local park and play nicely, then a Pit Bull might not be right for you.

The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) weigh an average of 60 pounds or less and are very muscular. Pitties are powerful dogs that can be difficult to walk on a leash if not properly trained; they may have a tendency to pull. Luckily, there are dog sports such as weight pulling and nose work that help keep healthy Pit Bulls mentally challenged while channeling their desire to pull.

A Pit Bull’s grooming needs are not high-maintenance. Brushing his coat a few times each week will help with shedding, and keeping his nails trimmed and ears clean is all that is needed to maintain him.

The Pittie comes with an unfortunate societal stigma. People who have Pit Bulls may face restrictions on where they can live or which homeowner’s insurance they can purchase. There is a lot of misinformation about Pit Bulls, and some people even want to outlaw the breed. Before getting one of these dogs, it is important to do your research so that you can make an informed decision. Research your area’s laws to see if it is legal to own one of these dogs in your town. Some towns also have ordinances specifying how a fence must be built for “Pit Bull-type” breeds. By doing this research, you can help educate friends and neighbors about the good qualities of this breed.
