Akita

The world’s most renowned Akita was a Japanese dog called Hachiko. He is greatly respected in Japan for his absolute loyalty and display of devotion. After his owner died, every day he would return to the railway station they always met at the end of the day in hopes that he would see him again one day.

The Akita is a large to giant breed of dog, typically weighing between 65 and 115 pounds. He has the typical spitz appearance: wedge-shaped head, prick ears, rectangular body with a dense double coat in any color or combination of colors and plumed tail curled over his back.

The Akita should be walked or run for 20 to 30 minutes every day, always on a leash. He does well in dog sports such as agility, obedience and rally, but they aren’t his favorite activities. He would rather have the more personal experience of being a therapy dog.

The Akita dog breed is known for its love of human companionship and does not do well when left alone outdoors.
