Akbash Dog

The Akbash is a sturdy and swift dog, as befits its occupation to protect Sheep herds. When not preoccupied with warding off wolves, the Akbash is level-headed and introspective, with an independent mindset. He is experienced in working alongside people rather than being subordinate to them.

The Akbash is traditionally a flock-guarding dog, but in the United States there are fewer jobs for him guarding flocks. Instead, he has become a family companion and property protector. He is gentle and affectionate with his family, but anyone who tries to intrude on his territory—including other dogs—will be sorry they ever met him.

The Akbash is a good dog for someone looking for protection, but they need an owner who can train them patiently and consistently. Like most dogs of this type, the Akbash matures slowly and won’t reach his full size or develop mentally until he’s two to three years old.

By leaving an Akbash dog chained outdoors with little to no attention will not only lead to emotional distress but possible aggression and destructive behavior. Although they’re able to live outside, it’s important that they spend most of their time indoors with their family where they can form strong bonds.
