Airedale Terrier

The Airedale, who some call “the king of terriers”, might just be the smartest of all the terrier breeds — a quality that will make him an excellent family pet if his owner doesn’t mind being outsmarted by their dog every once in awhile. Luckily, he’s gorgeous as well as smart, and charming enough to make up for any degree of stubbornness. Airedale Terriers need owners who provide them with consistent training from a young age and firm but loving guidance as they grow up. Those who don’t are likely to find that the Airedale Terrier is too much dog for them to handle.

Airedale Terrier fanciers can often be seen pointing proudly to the words of Theodore Roosevelt, who once said that this dog breed could “do anything any other dog can do, and then lick the other dog, if he has to.” While these dogs are no longer expected to perform such feats, they make excellent companions.

Not only is the Airedale a top-performing breed, but it has also been known to inspire companionship and loyalty in its owners. In fact, one of the most famous dog stories ever written – “Beautiful Joe” by Margaret Marshall Saunders – was based on an Airedale who suffered from abuse. This novel went on to spark the creation of the modern humane movement, making this breed truly special.

The Airedale Terrier loves its human family with abandon and plays games with great gusto. It will run, dance and clown around gleefully, but may dedicate the same level of enthusiasm to less desirable activities such as digging up your garden or chewing holes in your furniture.

Airedale Terriers, if left to their own devices, will create mischief. early and consistent training is necessary for this breed of dog to respect his intelligence and social tendencies. If you fail to give him the attention he needs through exercise, companionship, or affection, he will become unhappy very quickly.

You’ll understand why his fans are so passionate when you make him a member of the family, and give him plenty of activities to stimulate both his body and mind.
